NThe National Farmers Union – Ontario commends Agriculture Minister Jeff Leal for taking the proper steps to restore democratic principles in public policy and halt the Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission from unilaterally changing existing regulations without adequate consultation.
“Minister Leal has done the right thing by reigning in unelected appointees that had been prepared to take rash action on this important regulation and overstepped their role in a democractic society,” said Emery Huszka, NFU-O President.
Collective marketing is an integral part of agriculture, insuring fairness and access to market, price transparency and safeguarding diversity regardless of farm size.
“Farm groups spoke out collectively against the Commission’s actions and encouraged the Minister to make changes,” Mr. Huszka said, adding, “These actions show the efficacy of working together for the benefit of farmers.”
