Thanks to Connie White for her excellent report on our Orange Heritage Day: she did a fine job. Perhaps the missing “t” in British will turn up in good time.

On an historical note, King William’s victory at the Boyne in Ireland had a wider significance than its effect on that country. It in fact marked the end of the autocratic Stewart dynasty in the English-speaking world. The Stewarts had the unfortunate habit of believing in and promoting the doctrine of the Divine right of kings. After King William’s victory, the elected Parliament was the supreme decision making body in the land. American constitution scholars consider King William’s Glorious Revolution and victory at the Boyne to be a precursor to their Declaration of Independence (1776) and subsequent Constitution (1784). These are the real reasons for commemorating the Twelfth of July.

Yours respectfully, Keith Clifford
