Cobden — Pickleball has arrived in Cobden.
What is pickleball you ask?
“It’s like tennis for seniors,” said Lois Younghusband, one of the participants.
John Levesque is the president of the Cobden Pickleball Association.
While it’s still in the planning stages, he said anyone from 11 years and older can participate. The only equipment a person needs to bring is a pair of sneakers. The other equipment, paddle, ball and net, are provided by the association, courtesy of the Cobden and District Civitan Club.
Each participant has a paddle that’s about 6” by 6”. The ball “is a little bigger than a tennis ball” and has holes in it.
The court is about half the size of a tennis court, which means a person doesn’t have to move around as much, Mr. Levesque said. The courts are inside the Cobden Astrolabe Arena and they have been marked out.
There are two people per team and the score goes up to 11.
There are a few rules to follow, which will be explained to newcomers.
Mr. Levesque is hoping to establish a league in the area.
The courts will be available Tuesdays from 9 a.m. until noon and Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m.
“Come in any time (during those hours) and we’ll teach you,” Mr. Levesque said. “We’re hoping to have 20 participants by the end of June.”
If anyone wants to register or has questions, call Mr. Levesque, 613-646-9706.
