WESTMEATH — There was no shortage of sweet desserts at the first Sweetheart Dessert Buffet at St. Andrew’s United Church in Westmeath.
The event was Sunday evening and there was 40 different kinds of desserts, noted Myrtle Bromley, a member of the United Church Women (UCW) who organized the event. The desserts were on tables that took up the space along the basement’s back wall and about half-way down another wall.
“This was the first time we’ve done this,” she said. “We’d never even heard of it before.”
While it was organized by the UCW, there was no shortage of homemade desserts from throughout the congregation, she added.
The congregation knows the washroom facilities need to be upgraded, Ms. Bromley said. This was the first fundaiser to start the bank account for the project, she noted.
“It’s just a need we identified,” she said. “Now we need the money to do it. This was the start.”
The next fundraiser for the church, which is going towards the general fund, is the third annual All You Can Eat Spaghetti Supper, which is 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, also at the church.
The cost is $10 and the meal includes homemade meat sauce on the noodles, rolls and garlic bread, Caesar salad, a variety of cakes, ice cream and of course tea, coffee and juice.
St. Andrew’s is the only church in its parish, Ms. Bromley said. It was with Perretton and Greenwood, but Perretton closed and it was decided the last two would separate, she said. Rev. Suzanne Nadon offered to provide 15 hours a week towards ministering to St. Andrew’s she said.
Church service at St. Andrew’s is every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with Rev. Suzanne Nadon. When she takes a leave of absence with her husband, Rev. Rick Mefcalf (both are officially retired) so they can spend time with children and grandchildren, the parishioners have lay worship leaders.
“It’s working out quite Ok,” Ms. Bromley said.
