FORESTERS FALLS — An 11-year-old girl was heart-broken when she discovered that in some shelters, animals are killed when they aren’t adopted after a certain period of time.
“I came home from school and was crying because in some shelters they kill animals if they don’t get in a home,” said Christine Schwan. “I decided to do something about it.”
Her mom Sue added, “She came home in tears. Uncrontrollably, she was in tears. Christine is an animal lover.” Laughing, she added, “She will be one of these people you’ll go visit her in 20 years and she’ll be like an animal hoarder.”
With her 11th birthday fast approaching, the Queens Line girl decided instead of receiving gifts for herself, she would ask those attending to bring something for the I Am Alive Dog Rescue. She heard about this shelter through a friend of her mother’s. This shelter finds foster homes and new homes for dogs brought there.
Christine checked out the web site iamalivedogrescue.com and saw what was on the wish list and included those items on her invitation.
On July 12th, 11 friends attended the party and all brought gifts, not only for the I Am Alive shelter, but for her two dogs, Holly and Kelly, as well as a few for her.
When the party was over, Christine was able to donate to the shelter four boxes of dog treats, “a lot of toys,” paper towels, bleach, towels, blankets and a dog dish.
When asked if Holly and Kelly donated their box of treats, she said, “No. They would never do that!”
After boxing up the items to be dropped off at I Am Alive, Christine said, “I feel happy I can help save lots of dogs lives.”
An animal lover, Christine is planning similar birthday parties in years to come.
