WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — Members of Grace United Church were greeted by a sea of colours, design, patterns and creativity as they came for worship this past Sunday. It was their first quilt display, an idea suggested by Dorothy Edwards and she, along with help from Annette Gilchrist, organized the event. The ladies from the church supplied a lunch.
The congregation, and others, provided 52 quilts which were hung from the balcony or draped over the back of the pews. It made for an impressive backdrop for the Sunday service. The range of sizes was from one square foot to 90 by 106 inches.
Eleanor Tabbert brought a quilt which her grandmother, Grace Erskine (married to Isaac Cowie) made in 1891, while someone else brought in a quilt she had just completed and was going to give to her granddaughter on her next birthday.
Susan Gilchrist donated a baby quilt to be raffled off and Bert Olmstead was the lucky winner.
While the hymns rang out on this morning one could not help if their mind was to wander, thinking about the time spent creating the works of art, the conversations that went over on over the years while the quilts were being made, the friendships nurtured, the joy experienced with each one completed.
With the service coming to a close, the congregation flanked by the beautiful creations, could get a sense of warmth and comfort.
