WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — “It was unbelievable,” said golfer Laurie Graham when she discovered she had a Hole-in-One.

Saturday morning, June 9, Ms. Graham was golfing with Nancy Wood and Joan Peterson at the Oaks of Cobden on Kohlsmith Road. While she and Ms. Wood have been golfing together for years, this was the first time for Ms. Peterson to join the duo.

After hitting the ball from the tee at Hole 3, Ms. Graham said, “I knew it was a decent drop. I heard it hit the flag. I knew it was close.”

However, Ms. Peterson and Ms. Wood were both excited because they knew it had gone in.

“The other two girls were more excited than I was,” she recalled.

Not wanting to jinx it, Ms. Graham said she still walked onto the green with her putter.

“Then I got excited,” she recalled. “Long time golfers tell me I should be thrilled and I am.”

Hole 3 is a Par 3, which means it should take three shots to get the ball in. She figures the ball went about 124 yards before going into the hole.

A golfer for about 12 years, this is Ms. Graham’s first Hole-in-One. She golfs about two to three times a week, enjoying the fresh air, the exercise and of course the people she meets and the friends she has made.

“You can golf with anybody,” she said, adding, “You’re not segregated.”

Ms. Graham said the course is in great shape due to the staff, including Woody (Robert Wood), who takes care of the maintenance; Carrie Stoppa, the manager; and Gerold Paxton, the owner.

Ms. Stoppa said it varies how many hole-in-ones there can be in a year. Last year there was only about for or five.

“That’s not a lot for the amount of people who go through here in a day,” she said.

She noted there are about five different holes where there’s a good possibility of getting a hole-in-one.
