MICKSBURG — Five years after the passing of Walter Reiche, founder of Reiche Meat Products, Ltd, long time employee, Jeff Bennett, has purchased the business.
Mr. Bennett is very excited to be moving forward as the new owner, committed to continue the high standards of service and to maintain Reiche’s deep roots in the community.
Local food systems depend not only on the dedication and hard work of local farmers but also on essential services that support it, including local abattoirs.
Twenty years ago, there were over 15 provincially inspected slaughterhouses in Renfrew County. For a variety of reasons, there are currently only two left, although neither of them currently has poultry or rabbit lines available to local small farmers. This means that Renfrew county farmers must travel long distances to get rabbits and poultry processed with provincial inspection.
Reiche Meat Products, Inc. is excited to announce their new rabbit line is scheduled to be running later this spring thanks to the generous grant from the Carrot Cache and assistance from a community partner.
In addition, they have recently received cost share funding from the Greenbelt fund for development of a much needed poultry line and hopes to raise enough funds to have the poultry line running this fall.
However, Reiche Meat Products, Inc. will need to continue to build capacity and raise funds to complete this project and will be calling upon the community for additional partnerships and support.
