The Renfrew Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated 251 calls for service during the previous week.
Domestic Disputes
OPP officers investigated five domestic disputes during the past week. No criminal offences occurred.
Fraud Attempts
Residents in Arnprior and Renfrew areas continue to report fraudsters calling them, pretending to represent The Canada Revenue Agency. They are claiming the person owes back taxes and they are going to be arrested or their homes will have a lien placed on them. They are aggressive and rude. Break Enter and Theft
Provincial Constable Helen Paterson is investigating a break-in at the Arnprior shopping Centre. Several businesses were entered overnight Sunday, May 22 or early morning Monday, May 23. No alarms were set off, and a store owner discovered a safe stolen when they arrived early Monday. Businesses which were entered include Pizza Pizza, Sox Plus, Video Flicks and Rick’s Pet Store. The OPP Forensic Identification Unit attended to collect physical evidence. Anyone with information is asked to call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Several cottages or trailers were reported broken into over the weekend. Several of the break-ins may have happened over the winter months and are being reported now as seasonal residents open cottages for the summer. Police responded to reports on Mountain View Road, Nieman Drive in McNab Braeside, as well as Viewmount Drive and Calabogie Road in Greater Madawaska. Stolen property includes fishing gear, water skis, a wakeboard, golf clubs and two Coleman stoves.
A home on Hidden River Road in McNab Braeside Township was broken into on Wednesday, May 18. Stolen from the home was a large Sanyo flat screen television, a portion of a coin collection, two Royal Doulton figurines, one memorabilia baseball bat, an acoustic guitar as well as paint ball guns and equipment and a Beeman pellet gun. Provincial Constable Joel Cobb is investigating.
Driving Over 80 mgs
One male is facing charges after choosing to drive with excess alcohol in his system. On Friday, May 20 at 8:55 p.m., Provincial Constable Carlvin Burgins stopped a vehicle for a traffic offence on Calabogie Road. The driver had been drinking and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. Following further breath tests at the detachment Nicholas White, 27 of Ottawa, was charged with driving over 80mgs. He was released on a promise to appear in court in Renfrew on June 15.
Officers stopped a vehicle on Highway 417 near Arnprior after receiving a complaint about a speeding and aggressive driver. The male driver had been drinking and failed a roadside alcohol screening test. Following breath tests at the detachment Shawn Hartwig, 40 of Ottawa, was charged with impaired driving, driving over 80mgs. He will appear in court in Renfrew on July 7. He was also issued a provincial offence notice (ticket) for speeding, and one for being a novice driver – having a blood alcohol content above 0. Sgt Derek McLeod investigated.
Stolen ATV
An ATV was stolen from a hunt camp sometime during the week of May 12-19. The property is on Kaitlyn Road in Greater Madawaska Township. The ATV is described as a 2015 Yamaha Grizzly 700, camo coloured, with a gun rack, a windshield, and a camo box on the rear. The keys were not stolen with the ATV. Provincial Constable Chris Colton is investigating.
Fail to Stop for School Bus
A concerned citizen assisted in providing information after a silver Volkswagon failed to stop for a school bus with red lights flashing. On Friday, May 20 at approximately 8:45 a.m. police were notified of the incident on Russett Drive in McNab Braeside Township. The suspect vehicle was located in Arnprior and the driver, Charlie Galley, 19 of McNab Braeside, was charged for the offence.
Stolen Ladder
A ladder was stolen from the back of a truck overnight in Arnprior. The theft happened while the vehicle was parked on First Ave in Arnprior Wednesday night May 18-19. The 7-foot feather light ladder was on top of a work truck at the time.
