Fraud

Fraud attempts continue on a daily basis in Ontario and Renfrew County is no different. Fraudsters are creative and constantly create new scams to trick people into turning over their cash or personal information to them. Residents are encouraged to be proactive and learn about frauds and scams in order to protect you from becoming a victim. Some excellent educational websites to visit are: The Canadian Anti-Fraud Center, The Competition Bureau of Canada, and The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada.

Renfrew OPP officers investigated two fraud related calls during the past week. One victim purchased iTunes cards valued at $150 and provided the access code to a scammer who was to fix a problem with a cell phone and one victim reported someone obtained two credit cards in their name and made significant purchases or cash withdrawals. Many more calls were received where people were directed to report the incident to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre as there was no financial loss.
