Thefts
Officers investigated several theft complaints during the past week including a customer’s cell phone (IPhone 5a, in a white & pink case) stolen while they were shopping in Giant Tiger in Arnprior on Friday evening, construction material stolen from a property on John Street N in Arnprior, a wallet stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked at Tim Horton’s on White Lake Road in Arnprior, a spare tire stolen from a vehicle parked on Baskin Drive, a wallet and baseball equipment (2 gloves & 8 softballs) stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked at Clay Bank Boat Launch on Wednesday June 7 between 2-4pm. Please remove valuables from your vehicle and lock your vehicle – even if you are just stepping away for a minute. Thieves often operate when they see an opportunity. An unlocked vehicle with something of value in plain sight is tempting – especially to a thief!
Catfishing
Catfishing is the catchy phrase given to an online scam, seen recently in Renfrew County. A Catfish is an internet scammer who creates a fake profile on social networking sites; these predators trick people into thinking that they are someone else entirely. Some scammers do it simply out of loneliness, for spiteful reasons, or to extort money from a victim. In the Renfrew County case the victim exposed themselves online to the scammer, and was then threatened that a video made of the encounter would be broadcast to friends and family online unless they paid the scammer money.
