COBDEN — The sewer pipe work along Pembroke Street (Hwy. 17) from the Shell gas station to Cowley Street is now complete.
Certain sections of the sewer were lined while others were grouted, said Steve Danbruinessen of Clean Water Works.
Explaining it as simply as possibly, he said instead of having to dig up and replace the pipes, a polyester resin is blown into the pipes through a felt tube from manhole to manhole
“It’s like a silicone, a sealant,” he said.
Steam is then used to open the sealant and press it against the pipe, which takes two to three hours, and then cold air is blown through the pipe for another hour.
In some cases, there was some grout work done, which will stop the infiltration of storm water into the sewer system, which is very costly for the town water works, Mr. Danbruinessen said.
Prior to doing the work, which took about six days, there was also a few days of preparation work.
This lining will last for many years, he said.
The township budgeted $135,000 for the project, which includes $54,858 of funding from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund.
