COBDEN — You will soon be able to watch and hear what happens at Whitewater Region Township council and committee meetings, but only the day after.
Chief administrative officer Christine FitzSimons informed council at its meeting last night to live stream would mean one camera with a wide shot and and then the necessary technology.
It could also record the meeting and then put it on the web site the next day, which would mean no live streaming, she added.
She advised there have been live-streaming problems and people are moving away from that.
Reeve Terry Millar said prices have been investigated and it can be as little as $400 plus a tripod or go to a more elaborate system.
“This is an important thing or us to do,” he said. “There was a big swing in council and we promised transparency.
“Besides,” he said with a laugh, “it keeps guys like Hal in line.
“I don’t thing we should delay this.”
Reeve Millar said Howard Winters, who was in council chambers at the time video-taping the meeting on his cell phone, has done research on this and he suggested Mr. Winters be allowed to talk if council had questions for him.
“He can offer insight,” he said. “I don’t want to wait a month.”
Councillor Daryl McLaughlin agreed, noting there’s nothing holding council back from taping the meetings.
“That way, the public can access anything it wants from the council meetings,” he said.
Councillor Chris Olmstead suggested a motion be passed that if it can be accomplished with less than $2,000, it go ahead.
Following the passing of the motion, Councillor Charlene Jackson said this is the first local municipality to do this without a cable company.
