PEMBROKE — Enterprise Renfrew County had their first Starter Company applicant approved for the $5000 Starter Company grant.
Julie Johnson, the owner and creation artist of Smiling Daisies Soap Co. specializes in creating fresh, handcrafted, artisan bath and body products, along with a line of Ecosoya wax candles. Smiling Daisies Soap Co. is a home based business established January 2014, located in Chalk River, ON.
In 2014, Smiling Daisies Soap Co. participated in many craft shows and Farmers Markets throughout Renfrew County. With the help of the Starter Company grant, Smiling Daisies Soap Co. will be expanding business into wholesaling, and online sales, while still participating in the Deep River Farmer’s Market this summer starting May 30th and the Petawawa Showcase April 17, 18 and 19th. The grant money will be used to purchase equipment, and supplies to increase production to meet supply demands.
“By utilizing the grant money to purchase new equipment, Miss. Johnson will be able to focus attention on marketing and sales to expand her grassroots business and become another success story from Renfrew County.” said Colleen Sadler, Business Consultant for Enterprise Renfrew County.

The Youth Jobs Strategy was initially introduced in the 2013 Ontario Budget and invested $295 million over two years to help connect 30,000 youth with the tools, experiences and entrepreneurial support they need to find employment or start their own businesses. As part of the Youth Entrepreneurship Fund, The Starter Company program offers business training, mentoring, and a grant of up to $5,000 to eligible applicants who are Ontario residents ages 18 to 29, and who are starting or expanding a full time business, not attending school full time, and will be in effect until March 31, 2016.
