WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — Young people from Cobden District Public School, Beachburg Public School and Opeongo High School spoke in front of family and friends, as well as judges, during the annual Cobden Legion Public Speaking Competition.

The event was hosted by Cobden Legion Branch 550 Sunday morning. 15 students spoke about what they know best while on stage.

Judges Connie Tabbert, Gwen Bennett, Stephen Shortt and Ron Jaremkow, agreed it wasn’t always easy to grade the students.

Lori Buchan welcomed the speakers and guests and then called each speaker, via a number, to the stage. The judges were not told who the speakers were.

The winners in the primary division were Max Harris, Elliot Wylie and Ethan Covell, all from Cobden District Public School.

The intermediate division winners were Holly Howarth, Presley Rochon and Winston, all from Cobden public school.

The senior division winners were Megan Covell from Opeongo High School, Georgia Wylie and Charlotte Reynard, both from Cobden public school.

Cobden Legion president Kent McLaughlin presented each participant with a certificate and congratulated them with a handshake.

“It’s always interesting to hear the topics,” he said. “Well done everyone.”

Ms. Buchan then thanked the many volunteers involved in ensuring the success of the morning’s event.
