Tender loving care for St. Aidan’s church

FORESTERS FALLS — The Whitewater Historical Society must put in a formal request that it wants the St. Aidan’s Church in Foresters Falls painted this summer.
Mayor Hal Johnson, who is a council representative on the society, said the church, which is owned by the municipality, “needs some attention, and soon, in order to save it.”
He spoke about the topic at the May 4 corporate services committee meeting, saying possibly a summer student could be hired to do the painting. The student could also be used elsewhere in the township when required. When it was discussed by the society, it was decided that hiring a student would be the least expensive way to paint the church, he explained.
Chief Administrative Officer Christine FitzSimons suggested the brother and sister team hired to give swimming instruction this year could possibly paint the building.
“If they’re not interested, we could look elsewhere,” she added.
Councillor Daryl McLaughlin had concerns about a student painting the ceiling, as there would be safety concerns. He said a professional should be hired.
CAO FitzSimons noted there would have to be health and safety training for the student who would be working on scaffolding.
Steve Hodson, who is in charge of health and safety for the employees, said no student would be allowed to work on anything higher than 10 feet. He has difficulty finding training for township staff when it comes to working high-up on scaffolding.
It was agreed the society needs to put its request in writing and quotes will have to be requested for the painting of the church.
