There are only 23 days left to try the newest chip truck in Beachburg — The Pickle Vixens.
“This is our first venture together,” said Melanie Matthews.
The first venture is for sisters Ms. Matthews and Monica McGinnis, who grew up in Beachburg.
Looking back to when they were young girls, Ms. Matthews said their mom and granny used to make homemade batches of eggrolls, and the girls would help.
Being young girls, they tempted fate and tried putting various items into the egg rolls.
“We would put anything and everything in the egg roll wraps,” Ms. Matthews recalled.
Then, they would give the wraps as Christmas gifts.
They were so tastey, people began asking if they could buy the wraps, she said.
Over the years, they made more and more of the wraps, their most favourites being the Dilly Willy (deep fried dill pickle) and pizza rolls.
In the summer of 2011, the two sisters began operating the chip truck, but as Fab Food Shack and only at fairs, festivals, weddings and special events, Ms. Matthews explained.
This year, they decided to park the trailer-turned-chip truck in Beachburg, hire employees to work for them, and see what happens.
“We decided on Beachburg because it was our community growing up,” she said. “We decided we could use a twist on things and food trucks are all the rage.”
They located it beside The Hen House, across from Buchanan’s and only leave for fairs and other special events they are booked for.
They have a variety of food they provide for their customers, including poutine in variations including with pickles parmisan cheese and garlic and chives and bacon cheeseburgers.
The first time they tried poutine with pickles was at the Shawville Fair, Ms. Matthews recalled.
“All of us loved it when we tried it,” she said.
Besides poutine, they also offer combination platters, such as chicken casesar wrap with French fries and cole slaw, as an example and a sampler, which includes pizza roll, Dilly Willy and doob dogz (which is the pogo cousin).
“We came up with ridiculous names for our foods,” Ms. Matthews said.
They also provide something very unique — deep fried cheescake.
Ms. Matthews said the operational days and times recently changed for the Pickle Vixens. They are now open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, 3 to 7 p.m. The recent change was closing Wednesdays and opening on Sundays.
While they were hoping to remain closed on Sundays so their employees could be free to spend time with family, a recent survey showed people wanted them open on Sundays.
Ms. Matthews noted if the Pickle Vixens is a successful venture this year as a working chip truck, they’re hopeful of setting up again next year.
The Pickle Vixens will close up shop at the Beachburg location on Saturday, Aug. 29, however, they will be at various events, including the Carp and Shawville fairs.
The Pickle Vixens will be at the opening ceremonies of the 2015 World Freestyle Kayak Championships at the Beachburg ball diamond on Sunday, Aug. 30.
