DOUGLAS — The president, vice-president and directors changed for the Renfrew County National Farmers Union following Monday’s annual general meeting at the Barr Line Community Centre.
Prior to the election of officers, Chris Wooding of Ironwood Organics near Gananoque was the guest speaker. He spoke to a small crowd, due to the inclement weather, about direct marketing gardening. Following a 40-minute presentation, Mr. Wooding answered a few questions.
Tony Straathof stepped down after four years as the local’s leader.
“Thank you to all the members, especially the executive, for all your hard work,” he said at the March 6 meeting, adding, “It’s made being the president easier.”
Throughout the four years, Mr. Straathof has dealt with many issues, locally, provincially and nationally. He was elected to the provincial board and the national board. While he may no longer be the local president, he remains a member of the national board, having been re-elected to the board at the provincial annual general meeting held in Ridgetown this past weekend.
All positions for the local executive were acclaimed. Tim Tabbert moved up to president and Patrick Carter is now the vice-president. Both had been on the executive, Mr. Tabbert as vice-president and Mr. Carter as youth advisor.
Directors are Marshall Buchanan, Bruce Karlstrom, Dave Mackay and Mr. Straathof. Daniel Stermach is the youth advisor and Lauretta Rice is the women’s advisor. Directors-at-large are Margaret Robertson, Bob Dobson and Robbie and Christina Anderman.
Connie Tabbert was appointed secretary, a position she has held since 2014.
As the new president for the organization, Mr. Tabbert is hopeful of growing the membership, working with the other farm organizations and dealing with local issues.
“I look forward to working with the new executive,” he said.
Mr. Tabbert reminds members they can attend each monthly meeting, which is at the Barr Line Community Centre the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Meetings are also open to the public and all are able to participate in discussions, they just cannot vote on decisions, Mr. Tabbert noted.
