WHITEWATER REGION — A Township of Whitewater Region truck driver/machine operator has been promoted to the newly-created Supervisor of Arenas and Parks position.
Hugh Martin, is, and has been since 2005, the arena manager in Beachburg. He will now take over the management of the three arenas and parks within the municipality.
This was a decision made following a council meeting on June 21, where council approved changes to arena operations. Consultation with the three recreation associations was undertaken and public sessions were held on June 24 in Beachburg, Cobden and Westmeath.
At its meeting of July 5, council approved the creation of a Supervisor of Arenas & Parks position to oversee this new service area, under the leadership of the Manager of Community Services, Jordan Durocher. Existing casual arena operators will also now report to the Township, instead of the recreation associations.
Recreation associations will continue to be valued partners with a focus on programming and fundraising. The Westmeath & District Recreation Association will continue to operate the very successful and busy Westmeath community hall with a new 10-year lease.
Mr. Martin has the required certifications required for the position, including basic refrigeration, ice maintenance and equipment, ice making and painting technology, and Smart Serve.
Mayor Hal Johnson said, “We thank our community partners for all the work they have done throughout the years to support an active and healthy community. I appreciate the turnout at the public sessions and the support and suggestions received, which will assist us during this transition.”
Councillor Chris Olmstead, who is chair of community services, added, “We look forward to continued community engagement as we set up in the weeks ahead a Recreation Advisory Committee to ensure on-going resident input.”
Chief Administrative Officer Robert Tremblay said, “Mr. Martin is a valued member of our team and has the experience, contacts and knowledge to assist us in ensuring the continued success of our arenas with an added focus on our parks.”
