COBDEN — The back entrance to the Whitewater Region Township`s municipal office will be barrier free and the parking lot not so bumpy.
Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke MP Cheryl Gallant was in town last Friday to officially announce the township is receiving $24,525 to make these upgrades from the Enabling Accessibility Fund provided by Employmemt and Social Development Canada.
This is expected to cover two-thirds of the cost, noted Christine FitzSimons, the township’s chief administrative officer.
There are several health services for the area provided in the area this door serves as well as bingo, she said.
As for the parking lot, people are terrified of tripping, she said adding, some people have tripped and fallen because of the unevenness of the lot.
“The whole parking lot is cracked and bumpy,” Ms. FitzSimons said.
The community area provides a kitchen, community room and two bathrooms.
Mayor Hal Johnson said, “I’d like to thank Cheryl for working on this grant for us.” “It’s for a really great cause and it’s much appreciated.”
CAO FitzSimons noted much of the grant work was completed by deputy-clerk Hope Dillabough.
“Thank you Hope for taking the lead on this grant application,” she said.
MP Gallant is aware that senior citizens also use the community area for exercise classes.
“Let’s hope more seniors take the opportunity to keep fit,” she said. She also advised Ms. Dillabough of the New Horzons Grant that is available for upgrades where seniors meet.
