MANITOBA (Winnipeg) — The Canadian Half Marathon Championships were held on Sunday morning and took runners throughout the streets of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba.

Running the half marathon in 1:04:46, Tristan Woodfine from Cobden, set his personal best and won the men’s side of the race.

Mr. Woodfine spoke to Jonathan Yue from Athletics Canada about his race and what he expected to accomplish. As it turns out, he achieved what he had set out to do.

According to Athletics Canada, his goal coming in was to win the race so coming out of the race doing just that gave him confidence moving forward.

“I knew the field had some strong guys so the plan was to just race up front and hopefully a time would come with it, and it did,” said Mr. Woodfine to Mr. Yue. “The course was great and there were a lot of people cheering so that definitely helped in the back half of the race.”

Mr. Woodfine told Mr. Yue that with a great race now under his belt, he is looking to build off the experience moving onto a fall marathon. He may even be back at the course next year with everything falling into place.

“Coming away with the half marathon national title and a good time is reassuring that things are progressing well towards the fall.”

According to Canadian Running Magazine, Mr. Woodfine also had a great race in Houston and took three minutes off of his marathon personal best. This allowed him to finish as the top Canadian. His time from that race, 2:15:19, ranks him the third-fastest Canadian over the marathon distance for 2019.
