UOV OPP auxiliary recruit honoured with award

PEMBROKE — Five new Auxiliary Constables have recently joined ranks at the Upper Ottawa Valley OPP Detachment. The newest Auxiliary Members of the OPP are Diane Hokum, Kelsey Michaud, Mike Publow, Colton Keuhl and Chelsey Schoenfeldt.
At a meeting on September 14, Detachment Commander Mark Wolfe welcomed the new members and presented an award to 24-year-old Chelsey Schoenfeldt of Golden Lake. She who was recognized by OPP Instructors as the Most Outstanding Recruit in the June 2016 Auxiliary Constable Recruit Class. In total 51 recruits from all over Ontario successfully completed the training in June 2016 which took place at OPP Headquarters in Orillia.
“Our newest Auxiliary Members will assist us in continuing to build positive relationships with our community by taking part in many community safety strategies that are proactive and innovative,” stated Inspector Mark Wolfe.
Auxiliary Constables are dedicated civilian volunteers who assist regular OPP officers with many tasks, including:
• Community Policing and Crime Prevention Initiatives
• Large gatherings or parades
• Patrol
• Traffic Accidents
• Special Events
In order to become an Auxiliary Constable prospective auxiliary members are required to complete a series of tests which include an aptitude and psychological assessment. If successful, applicants must complete a 60-hour recruitment orientation course. The training course covers powers of arrest, use of force, OPP policy, note taking, traffic control, firearms and radio training.
