Update on mischief, break-ins under investigation

Two young people charged, investigation continues

RENFREW COUNTY (Laurentian Valley) — In early November 2019, the Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) began investigating acts of mischief and break-ins to several businesses in the 1300 block of Pembroke Street West in Laurentian Valley Township. 

Multiple businesses were victimized in the early morning hours of November 2, 2019. Several outdoor monuments were toppled and damaged, various buildings were broken into and vehicles and security cameras were targeted. Damage has been estimated to be in the thousands of dollars. 

As a result of this investigation, in mid-December 2019, a 15 year old from Pembroke was arrested and charged with the following Criminal Code (CC) offences:

  • Mischief under $5000 – four counts
  • Mischief over $5000 – two counts
  • Break, enter and commit an indictable offence – two counts
  • Theft over $5000
  • Breach of recognizance

The youth was released and is scheduled to appear in Youth Court at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on February 13.

In late January, a Laurentian Valley resident, who was 17 years old at the time of the offences, was arrested and charged with the following CC offences:

  • Mischief under $5000 – four counts
  • Mischief over $5000 – two counts
  • Break, enter and commit an indictable offence – two counts
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
  • Theft over $5000

The accused was released and is scheduled to appear in Youth Court at the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on March 5. 

Further arrests and charges are anticipated. The investigation is continuing.
