WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) – It was a disappointing turnout of people who would like to volunteer for the Whitewater Kings.
But, that’s not a concern of general manager Kevin Ready or game day operator Jamie McConnell.
The two, along with team secretary Lynn Foley, spoke to a group of less than 10, a week ago.
The meeting was to advise people how to become involved as volunteers with the Whitewater Kings, what positions are available and to fill out an application form.
Ready said, “Dealing with presentation of the game is complicated. We need a good volunteer effort.”
For high school students, these volunteer hours can go towards the community service hours they require prior to graduation, he said.
There are volunteer positions in off-ice officiating, such as the penalty box and clock; canteen staff; security; public address announced; general admission, music and video.
While many of the positions are routine, Ready noted specific skills in the area of video are required. The video will be used to review the game with the players and coaching staff the next day, he explained.
“This area will require some training,” he said.
While he was “hoping to be overwhelmed” with people who wanted to volunteer, the reality what the small group that did show up, Ready said.
“Now we need to expand the brigade,” he said. “It’s three weeks before we are on the ice. We need to bet the bushes and find volunteers.”
Ready said the hockey club is partnering with various organizations who may need financial help within Whitewater Region. However, the partnerships are still being worked on, so which ones they are won’t yet be released.
