The Council of the Township of Whitewater Region approve the award of RFP 2021-29 Wellhead Protection Area to GeoCentric Environmental Inc. at a cost of $68,012.31 inclusive of non-refundable H.S.T.

Department of Roads head Lane Cleroux said that the study was to follow-up on the last study from 2003, and there had been “a lot of changes” since then, including the Clean Water act and new wells, as well as new technical rules.

He said 14 firms picked up the RFP, but only 2 presented outlines that fit the Township.

“I understand the regulations and why we have a responsibility to protect the waterways, but as a landowner with a well on my property I have no responsibilities beyond making sure it abides by the regulations. Why can’t we establish those for our wellheads, and do this every 18 years.” Councillor Nicholson said.

Cleroux said it was a recommendation as part of an inspection in 2019.

“These are pretty important studies.” CAO Trembley said. “These are the water supplies of Haley’s Station. This applies to the drinking water safety of the entire region.”

“There’s nothing stating we have to do this.” Environmental Services Superintendent Steve Hodgens said. “This is our due diligence, we have a massive responsibility to people. We’re not obligated to do it, but it’s recommended. Highly recommended.”

The motion was carried.
