Westmeath Cenotaph Letter: Tammy Smith

There has been much discussion regarding the movement or non movement of the Westmeath Cenotaph. Like last week’s letter to the editor, I was shocked to learn that a decision had been reached to not move the Westmeath Cenotaph. Like many readers we learned of this decision in this publication.

I am saddened and dismayed by council’s decision not to move the Cenotaph to the new park.

I understand that there was some opposition to this by a small group of locals, I am not sure why and quite honestly it is not my concern.
Anyone I have spoken to feels quite strongly that the most appropriate place for the cenotaph is front and center in our new beautiful park.

The cenotaph certainly represents those from the community who laid down their lives to keep this great nation free! Beyond that the cenotaph should represent those military personnel who have served, who are serving and those who will serve.

Although my background is not military I have experienced loss of colleagues and friends in the line of duty from a law enforcement perspective. This loss much like I can imagine would be similar to losing a friend, colleague or family member in the military, cuts deeper and is different from any other kind of loss.

Families are completely blind sided by the pain that this type of loss creates and the void that can never be filled. One small measure of solace for families, friends and colleagues is knowing their loved one will be remembered through public tributes such as a cenotaph. This cenotaph represents those from the community but also the greater military family. This is for the fallen but also honours those who sacrifice daily in their military service whether it be missing a child’s birthday, parents anniversary, birth of a child and the list goes on! A cenotaph is an opportunity for us to stop in public or private reflection for all that the military does for all of us! A prominent display in a new beautiful park is the least we can do to show our gratitude and thankfulness!
