Westmeath Cenotaph Woes

I am a newcomer to Westmeath ( not quite 3 years now).

I was so pleased to see the new benches being set up in the village of Westmeath and the flower boxes…how lovely! and then how exciting to see the regreening and lovely work happening at the corner…in what I now understand is called the Boyer- Laderoute park! Then …with dismay…I read the articles in the newspaper last week….oh my…! What nonsense……

It makes huge sense to me to move the Cenotaph in such a pretty site as opposed to it being hidden away in an obscure area, next to old cars….and a ball park….

Really…? I don’t understand the politics of this “old guard” referred to in the letters…however I remain convinced that this much prettier and pleasant corner and prominent view would have all vets smiling down on Westmeath from above! If not a cenotaph… what will happen to this corner..? Most likely a skate board or other type area…that will not shine as nicely as a cenotaph might have….Sad to see this happening and here is hoping that “calm, reflective and cool heads” will prevail. After this period of Covid—we need good news and nice views!

I am in favour of the new Cenotaph location!
