WESTMEATH — On March 11, 2015 Westmeath Public school went to Shaw Woods.
They went to have a fun and educational day! Shaw woods is open to the public and is a great outdoor education facility.
While at Shaw woods the students got to go into a Quincy Hut. It had a window and a small door and would be used for people to sleep in while in the woods, although the students enjoyed playing in it.
The students went snow shoeing and it was fun and very hard work.
Addison Buckwald noted, “I kept on falling and it was hard to get up.”
Since it was March the students were able to help tap trees using a brace and bit and thought it was easy for one tree but maybe not for 100!
They then got to taste sap that had just come out of the tree and it did not taste as good as they thought.
They also made maple taffy.
Gracey Bulmer commented, “You could not even get it off the stick!”
One of the highlights of the day was feeding the birds. They would come close to the hands but not land on them and many flew over their heads. Blue Jays were the popular bird.
Students were taught how to make bannock. The Primary class had made bannock at school and it was gross but this bannock was much better. It had to be cooked over the fire.
Gabe Silke said, “My first stuff fell in the fire but the second one tasted good.”
The day could be summed up as Maria Crest said, “ It was FUN.”
