Whitewater Kings home opener is Saturday

WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — Home opener of the Whitewater Kings is this Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Astrolabe Arena in Cobden.

The puck drops between the Kings and Arnprior Packers at 7:30 p.m.

General Manager Jamie McConnell said prior to the game starting, the players will each be introduced and the new jerseys unveiled. There will also be a special presentation to Volunteer of the Year.

Volunteers with the Muskrat Minor Hockey Association will also be selling 50/50 tickets again this year.

New for this year are season passes, McConnell said. They are $150 for adults and $135 for seniors (60 and over). They will be on sale at this Saturday’s game.

The cost for each game has not changed from last year, $5 for students, $7 for seniors 60 and over and $9 for adults, he said.

On Sunday, Sept. 23, the Kings travel to the Embrun Arena for a puck drop at 1:30 p.m. against the Embrun Panthers.

The Kings’ games this past weekend saw them defeated by Ottawa Junior Canadians 5 to 1 on Saturday and then by the Alexandria Glens 9 to 2 on Sunday.

In the Ottawa game, the lone goal scorer was Artyom Shiman assisted by Brad Richardson. It was just three minutes into the first period. However, Ottawa responded with four in the second and one in the third to win this game.

The Kings collected 42 minutes in 11 penalties, including a 10-minute misconduct-unsportsmanlike by goalie Kevin Proulx, served by Quinn Vanhoof, and Reid Barber tallied 19 minutes in penalties 25 seconds into the third period, including five minutes major fighting and a 10 minute game misconduct.

The Junior Canadians collected 23 penalty minutes on five penalties.

Ottawa’s goalie Ryan Whitehurst saved 14 of 15 shots on goal while Kings’ goalie Kevin Proulx was kept quite busy, saving 50 of 55 shots on goal.

In Sunday’s 9 to 2 loss, the Kings goal scorers were Shiman assist by Richardson and Josh Hampel assist by Brayden Stewart and Jake Pilon, both in the first period. Glens scored throughout the three periods.

On the penalty side, the Kings collected 46 minutes on seven penalties while the Glens collected  33 minutes on eight penalties.

Kings goalie Anthony Kervin saved 35 of 44 shots on goal while Glens goalie Nicolas Rousseau saved 22 of 24 shots on goal.

Upcoming: On Saturday, Oct. 6, those attending the game are asked to bring a food donation for the Cobden Food Bank. Following the game against the Renfrew Timberwolves, there will be entertainment in the upstairs lounge.
