Whitewater Region Youth Bursaries presented to six students

WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — Six high school graduates were each presented with a $250 cheque and a congratulatory letter as recipients of the Whitewater Region Outstanding Youth Bursary.
These are the stars of the future, said Mayor Hal Johnson as he prepared to present four of the six bursary winners with their certificates and cheques at the start of last night’s council meeting.
“We’re very, very proud to be starting this, this year,” he said.
Seven area high schools can apply to have a student receive the bursary, noted Chief Administrative Officer Robert Tremblay. Six students received a $250 bursary this year.
As Mayor Johnson presented each student with the bursary he said, “Congratulations. I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected by your school to receive the Whitewater Region Outstanding Youth Bursary.
“We are very proud to present this to you and wish you all the best.”

The bursary recipients are:
Madison Letang graduated from St. Joseph’s High School and will be attending Algonquin College in the fall for Early Childhood Education.

Mara Peever graduated from Opeongo High School and will be attending the University of Waterloo for Environmental Engineering.

Kaitlyn Wallace graduated from Jeanne Lajoie and will be attending university in the fall to become a registered nurse.

Kirstin Regier graduated from Bishop Smith Catholic High School and is attending Algonquin College for her Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Paige Knechtel graduates from Fellowes High School and will be attending St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia.
Paige is on her way to Kenya Africa specifically the Maasai Mara region on a service trip with MeToWe.  She will be living in a tented camp for three weeks and volunteering at local communities to help with projects like building schools, bathrooms, digging wells or irrigation. She will have the opportunity to spend a day with a local family and experience what they go through.
Paige fund-raised for her entire trip and is very thankful to the many people who supported her and a few groups who sponsored her.
She left July 5th and will return July 24th.

John Bossy graduated from Renfrew Collegiate Institute and is pursuing a post-secondary education in film or media related programs at either York or Ryerson university.
