WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — The Beachburg Arena will be receiving a new ice resurfacer machine for the 2020 to 2021 ice season, according to the Council of the Township of Whitewater Region.
“Currently, we are operating with a 1991 Olympia ice resurfacer in Beachburg and this machine is past it’s useful life,” said Jordan Durocher, manager of Recreation and Tourism. “Maintenance is starting to catch up with us.”
According to Mr. Durocher, while a zamboni was considered, the decision was made to go with Olympia because they’re a Canadian company whose factory is located in Ontario.
He added there is a zamboni at the Westmeath Recreation Centre, but they have run into problems when parts were needed and did not arrive for three weeks.
“[In] our experience with Olympia, within a day or so we are able to get parts and get the machine back up and operating,” stated Mr. Durocher.
The new machine would come equipped with an ice leveller kit, which Mr. Durocher says will help with ice conditions and overall operations. The kit keeps the ice at the proper thickness, which will help reduce hydro costs.
