WHITEWATER REGION — There were a few laughs during a special presentation at Whitewater Region council meeting last night.

Cathy Williamson was presented with the Senior of the Year award for 2018.

“This is a very, very serious part of what we do at our council, and that’s is saying thank you to people within our municipality for things they have done, such as volunteering, and being over 65, but just barely,” Mayor Hal Johnson said.

With Ms. Williamson beside him, he said council nominated her for the award.

“This is for the years up till now and maybe the years forward,” he said. “We want to say thank you.”

This award is presented to Ms. Williamson “in recognition of your outstanding contribution to our community after age 65.”

Jokingly he said for a whole year, with Ms. Williamson laughing as she added, “No, I’m 71.”

Following a few more words that brought much laughter in the council chambers, Ms. Williamson said, through her laughter, “You guys are saints working with him. Have you ever seen a mayor like him?”

She thanked council for the award and added, “Many, many people could have this award and probably should.

“All through my career as teacher and administrator of schools, one thing I learned really quickly was team. You can’t do it by yourself, you got to have a team.”

There should be many people’s names on this award, because there would not be a seniors’ play unless there is a production committee or a tea without a tea committee or a dance without a dance committee, she said.

“One thing I learned there is no I in team,” Ms. Williamson said. “It’s all about working together.

“I am really honoured.”
