WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) — Four health organizations each had a hole-in-one, as they each received $3,000 from the Cobden and District Civitan Club.
The 23rd annual Cobden and District Civitan Golf Tournament was held at the Oaks of Cobden on Friday, Aug. 3. There were 203 golfers.
Mary Moss, chair of the tournament committee, thanked the many people involved with the event, including hosts Jerry and Janet Paxton, Carrie Stoppa and staff at the golf course, the hole sponsors, the volunteers and of course the golfers.
“Thank you very much to all the volunteers who gave their time and all the golfers, who come back year after year,” Ms. Moss said, adding, “We have fabulous support from the community.”
She said no one hit a hole-in-one, so the $10,000 prize remains in the bank.
Club president Fred Laderoute then presented the four $3,000 cheques to representatives from the Whitewater Bromley Community Health Centre, Hospice Renfrew, Renfrew Victoria Hospital and Pembroke Regional Hospital.
The funds for RVH will go towards the physiotherapy department, noted Dr. Stephanie Langlois. It will be used to purchase equipment to help people with movement of the upper and lower extremities, she said.
Dr. Tom Hurley from PRH noted it will be used in the expansion of the surgical department.
A vaccination fridge will be purchased for the Cobden site of the Whitewater Bromley Community Health Centre, said John Jordan, executive director.
He thanked the club for hosting such an event, noting, “It’s clubs like this that make rural Ontario great.”
Trophies and prizes were then handed out.
The top women’s team with a score of 73 was Carrie Stoppa, Marg Davidson, Bria Ferguson and Mary Afelskie
The top mixed team with a score of 64 was Sean and Jackie Tanguay, Jesse Riopelle and Hillary McMillan.
There was a tie for the top men’s team, however, using the rules to break a tie, the winning team belonged to Mike Stoppa, Ivan Burke, Chris Pope and Jerome Afelskie. The other men’s team was Tom Ladouceur, Josh Laderoute, Jordan Lalonde and at some holes Sandy Laderoute.
Val Buttle and Jeremy Ross won closest to the hole prizes while Ellan Mackay with a 17.8 foot putt and Doug Willis with a 27.6 foot putt won longest putt.
The morning putt winner was the team of Jim Cobb, Jonathan Cobb, Melissa Bolton and John Doddridge.
Joanne Hodgins and Terry Pitt each won $225 in the Pot of Gold draw.
Next year’s golf tourney will be held Friday, Aug. 2, 2019.
