WHITEWATER REGION (Cobden) —  The Beach House in Cobden will soon display a new name. The Elmer E. Winters Building Beach House will be recognized with a plaque commemorating Elmer E. Winters, who demonstrated an extraordinary community service through his volunteers efforts.

Elmer was named Civitan’s Citizen of the Year in 2016 and was an active volunteer down at the Cobden Park and Beach.  He served his community with noteworthy contributions by ensuring the park and beach were welcoming and attractive.

It is said that during the infestation of sea gulls at the Cobden Municipal Beach, Elmer could be found cleaning the bird droppings every morning so the children could have their swimming lessons.

Every morning and evening in the summer months, Elmer was a regular at the park to greet campers and visitors and ensure they had a positive experience in Cobden.

Sadly, Mr. Winters passed away in his 82 year on December 17, 2016. Elmer will be remembered by many people in his community.

According to Jeannelle Romain, Elmer Winters was a kind and generous man who was always looking to help others. He states he was never willing to accept anything in return because he took great joy in being of service to others.

On June 3, family and friends were invited to celebrate the unveiling

of this special moment. Despite the rain, family and friends were able to

share fond memories with their dear husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Due to a suggestion by Ted Barron, the Township of Whitewater Region chose to honour Elmer’s service and devotion to the town by dedicating the beach house in his name. Friends and family are delighted Elmer’s memory will live on in one of his regular visited places.
