Whitewater Region – The Relief Centre at the Westmeath Hall will be closed starting Friday and will be open again Tuesday and Thursday next week from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for impacted residents. A community breakfast is being planned for Saturday, June 22. If you would like to donate food or your time please contact the hall to sign up at 613-587-4559.
A Recovery Information Fair occurred Sunday, June 9 from 2 to 5 p.m. on the Westmeath Rink Slab. This is a one-stop open house for affected residents to get information specifically for recovery operations, such as debris management, roads, zoning, assessment, building/septic permits. In addition to Township resources, other agencies will be present.
Please note MPP John Yakabuski is hosting a public engagement session in Westmeath on Sunday, June 23 at 9 a.m. to hear from residents on flood mitigation and preparedness. The MPP has invited agencies involved in river levels and ministry officials. Three other sessions are also being organized for that weekend at other locations in Renfrew County and open to Whitewater Region residents.
Flood debris and sand bags are accepted at no charge at the landfill at 990 Kohlsmith Road during regular hours of operation (Wednesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.).
Waste bins for flood debris are deployed at the Westmeath Garage, LaPasse Boat Launch, and at Sandpoint Road and in the Lacroix Bay area. Bins will be emptied on Monday and Friday on a go forward basis. These bins are reserved for flood related material. Sandbags should not be placed in the bins, but can be deposited next to them.
The Westmeath & District Recreation Association (WDRA) has formed a Flood Recovery Resource Committee on behalf of the Township to identify needs, coordinate and prioritize resources. We ask those who wish to volunteer or self-identify for support to contact Committee Member Vince Gervais, visit the Relief Centre at the arena, or fill out the request form at Team Rubicon’s website at https://forms.gle/ufPueCQUokjXLDWe9.
With water levels sufficiently receded to allow construction access, emergency repairs to impacted municipal roads are being completed to allow vehicular access by emergency services and affected residents.
