Four motorcycle fatalities in May

ONTARIO — Motorcyclist fatalities on Ontario Provincial Police-(OPP)-patrolled roads are up 300 per cent this year over last year, with all four 2020 deaths occurring in the month of May.

OPP investigations into the collisions revealed that in separate incidents, two of the four motorcyclists who died were driving properly at the time of the collision. The incidents mark the latest reminder that even safe motorcyclists are vulnerable when sharing the road with other vehicles and that motor vehicle drivers play an important role in motorcycle safety.

The other two separate incidents involved excessive speed, which has been one of the top contributing factors in motorcyclist fatalities on OPP-patrolled roads over the past 10 years. In support of Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the OPP is reminding motorcyclists to watch their speed, drive alcohol and drug-free, and make themselves as visible as possible to other drivers.

During the riding season, motor vehicle drivers are reminded to keep a watchful eye out for motorcycles and ensure they are doing frequent blind spot checks.
