The Grade 7/8 band at Cobden District Public School and three bands from Opeongo High School brought home hardware from the Kiwanis Music Festival held in Pembroke last month.
“The students received a mark of 90 percent and we won the trophy and scholarship of $100 for Best Band donated by Star Set Jewellers,” Cobden music teacher Jennifer Bell said.
The students in the band are Mary Finan, Leigha Bennett, Elyza Wren, Eryka Lariviere, Cassie Brenner, Carolyn Bolle, Grace Glogowski, Khloe Bertrand, Ciera Bennett, Katie Mick, Paige Millar, Bailey Tinney, Megan Covell, Penny Gordon, Mackenzie Bryanton, Austin Prins, Wesley Peever, Emma Prange, Justin Baycroft, Hayley Stewart, Travis Roy, Mckoel Patterson, Renee Taken, Andrew Lemieux, Wesley Gordon, Michelle Coleman, Kiannah Barr, Sydney Ferguson, Connor Robinson, Joel Baycoft, Tim Petermann, Tom Petermann and Pierre Petermann.
The Opeongo High School concert band received a second place finish; the Jazzcats won two first place finishes, a trophy and a scholarship for Best A Capella performance and the Saxy Beasts fusion group won first place and the trophy for Best Jazz Performance, noted teacher Jodie Armstrong.
The concert band and the Jazzcats are travelling to the nationals, which are from May 18 to 20th.
To raise funds for the trip, the Spring Concert at Opeongo High School is Thursday, May 4 at 6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.
