Councillor Chris Olmstead made a Notice of Motion for the Township of Whitewater Region to allow him to waive rules of procedure and pass a motion immediately to begin negotiations with an undisclosed hockey team to base in the Whitewater Region.

The Notice of Motion read as follows:

“Junior Team Agreement – Councillor Olmstead Requires 2/3 Vote
Recommendation: Whereas, the Township of Whitewater Region has welcomed a Junior Team to Cobden since 2017; and
Whereas, a Junior Team contributes revenue to the Township through significant ice time and also attracts visitors and other economic development benefits; and Whereas, the one-year agreement with the current team has expired; and
Whereas, preparations are underway for the 2022-2023 ice season and an agreement needs to be in place with a viable team as soon as possible;
Therefore be it resolved that Council of the Township of Whitewater Region waive the rules of procedure to consider this motion without prior notice at the meeting of June 22, 2022; and
Further that staff be directed to report back at the August 3, 2022 meeting on a potential multi-year agreement with a viable Junior Team for the 2022-2023 season; such agreement should include necessary provisions to ensure timely payment of fees, including deposits.

“I don’t really want to say a whole lot more than that.” Olmstead said.

“We’re looking a multi-year agreement for a user in Cobden.”

He said that he wanted to be clear ‘that this would be brought back to council when we have a full agreement’.

Councillor Nicholson asked for clarification to ask Staff and a junior hockey team for a multiyear agreement.

Olmstead confirmed they were looking for a ‘five year agreement’ that was looking for ‘minimum of the same amount of ice time’ as previous times, ‘maybe more’.

He said that “all I can say right now is a junior level caliber team.”

The motion was carried with 2/3rd vote.
