One year done, looking forward to decades coming

Dear Readers,

One year has come and gone since I took over from my predecessor, Mrs. Connie Tabbert. I’m more in love with the job and area now than I was then, and I was already pretty obsessive. My family now calls the Beachburg area home. Once the restrictions have been lifted, you will find us enjoying cycling, kayaking, paddle boarding and yoga.

Getting to meet you readers while I’m covering events and conducting interviews has truly been the highlight of this past year. I am grateful to those of you who let me record your histories, to those who reach out with story ideas, column ideas, photos and news tips, and to those who read our newspaper each and every week.

Thank you to the contributors who take hours each week to craft submissions and help to give the newspaper it’s unique voice. I’m still pretty “green” when it comes to agricultural reporting and I appreciate each and every one of you who takes the time to teach me something new.

Introducing the weekly crossword has been the most abundant and positive feedback received to-date and I 0thank each and every one of you who takes on the weekly challenge. One reader even compared them to the Sunday crossword in the New York Times! If you haven’t already, give them a shot and I would love to hear how you make out. Thank you for supporting independent journalism and inviting us in to your home every week.

Another big thank you goes out to the businesses and readers who support us through advertising, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We do not have a large budget or staff and we all volunteer our time and talents to make this newspaper what it is. Without the joint efforts of everyone, this newspaper wouldn’t be possible. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.

For readers who don’t favour email, you can always send me a handwritten letter addressed to Megan Chase, P.O. Box 234, Beachburg, Ontario, K0J 1C0. You can also support local by placing classified ads from $10 a week and getting a subscription for Whitewater News. For a six month subscription it is $25 and for a one year subscription it is $50. The cost includes delivery if you reside on our route, so get in touch to see if you qualify.

Happy Reading and stay healthy!
Megan Chase, Editor
