RENFREW — Nursing Week 2018 culminated with staff gathering to celebrate the achievement of a major milestone at Renfrew Victoria Hospital.

In 2015, RVH began a journey to implement best practices through the Registered Nurses of Ontario’s (RNAO’s) Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) program.

BPSOs are healthcare organizations selected by RNAO to implement and evaluate its internationally acclaimed Best Practice Guidelines (BPG). These guidelines incorporate evidence-based practice to enhance patient outcomes.

All of the required deliverables of the program were met by RVH and on April 19 a small group of representatives travelled to Toronto to attend a special ceremony.

“Congratulations on a very successful BPSO journey!” said the RNAO progress report, citing “impactful, positive outcomes for all Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) implemented.”

More than 50 frontline nurses and allied healthcare staff were instrumental in supporting the uptake of the BPGs and evidence-based practice across the organization.

“Our BPSO designation is a testament to the leadership and hard work of our team, as well as our commitment to the highest standards of excellence in care to all of our patients, from the elderly, to people living with chronic disease, to vulnerable women in our community,” said Chris Ferguson, RVH VP of Patient Care Services.

Throughout its three-year candidacy, RVH implemented eight RNAO BPGs that will positively impact the health and well-being of its patients, including:

  • screening for delirium, dementia and depression in older adults
  • patient- and family-centred care
  • decision support for adults living with Chronic Kidney Disease
  • women abuse: screening, identification and initial response in the ED
  • assessment and management of pain.

“The degree of influence and respect your BPSO work has generated is something you can certainly take great pride in and boast about during Nursing Week,” said Heather McConnell, Associate Director, Guideline Implementation and Knowledge Transfer, RNAO. “Renfrew Victoria Hospital, as a BPSO, belongs to an elite group of health and academic organizations across the province, nationally and internationally. The common thread you share is the desire to prepare nurses and others with best practices, to integrate them in your everyday work, and have a positive impact on outcomes for clients, providers, the organization and the system. There is no doubt that collectively you are helping to make our health-care system more effective, efficient and responsive.”

By applying the best knowledge and evidence, RNs and other healthcare professionals are ensuring the care they provide for patients at RVH is the very best. Together, we are transforming nursing, health and healthcare through knowledge, added McConnell.

“We’re excited to continue our BPSO journey by spreading our success to other healthcare partners in Renfrew County and by providing peer mentoring to other hospitals in the province trying to achieve this important milestone,” stated Ferguson.
