The Council of the Township of Whitewater Region approved a a swim program for children who reside in the Township of Whitewater Region through programs offered by neighbouring municipalities as a result of an unsuccessful attempt in securing certified lifeguards for the 2022 summer.

Jordon Durocher reported that they have had lifeguard staffing problems since 2018 due to COVID-19.

“The pandemic happened, and as a result, recreational are in quite of a predicament. “ he said. “it’s making it very difficult for youth to train and get these certifications.”

He said that the program would then go to agreements with other municipalities to enroll locals in swimming certification programs.

“Should Council approve this, we can take the lifeguard salaries to offset these non-resident fees.” he said. “I see this as a struggle. Ongoing partnerships are going to be a long-term reality. It’s 29-39 dollars for non-residents, and that would be funded by the lifeguard fees.”

Mayor Moore asked if this would give Durocher the “go-ahead.”

“These are really swim lessons.” CAO Trembley said. “We will go with Pembroke for July and August, and Jordan’s replacement will look into an agreement for 20-23.”

The motion was carried.
