UOV OPP charge two with stunt driving

LAURENTIAN VALLEY —  As part of the commitment to the Provincial Traffic Safety Program the Upper Ottawa Valley Detachment of the OPP is currently participating in the annual Canada Road Safety Week campaign which runs from May 15 to May 21. The seven-day campaign is a collaborative effort by Canadian Police Services which targets high risk driving behaviours that puts all road users at risk.  Officers are paying specific attention to the “BIG 4” which, in terms of personal injury causation are impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and lack of occupant restraint.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 16, police conducted a traffic stop on Highway 17 in Laurentian Valley Township after a vehicle was found to be travelling 142 kilometres per hour in a posted 90 kilometres per hour zone. The 18-year-old male driver from Pembroke was charged with operating a motor vehicle while performing a stunt – speeding, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).

Approximately one hour later that same afternoon, on Highway 17 in Laurentian Valley, police conducted a traffic stop after a vehicle was found to be travelling 170 kilometres per hour in a posted 90 kilometre per hour zone. The 60-year-old male driver from Whitewater Region was charged with operating a motor vehicle while performing a stunt – speeding, contrary to the HTA.

Both drivers were issued a summons to appear at the Ontario Provincial Offences Court in Pembroke. Both drivers also had their driver’s licenses suspended and their vehicles towed and impounded, both for a period of seven days.
