COBDEN — The Pullin’ for Patsy organizing committee recently gave Patsy Moore just under $18,000.
This money was raised during three recent events — trivia night, golf tournament and a barbecue/silent auction/bash at the Cobden Legion.
This fundraiser for Ms. Moore is to help her with living and medical expenses as she battles cancer once again.
Well-known throughout the area, it’s commonly known that if you need help, and Ms. Moore knows, she’ll be there in a heart-beat, said committee member Janet Burns.
“We decided to get together and help her,” she said.
The committee members had a difficult time convincing Ms. Moore that people wanted to help her out as she has helped them.
The members, Ms. Burns, Betty Heubner, Danielle Howatson, Erica Rice, Connie Tabbert, Norma Grant, Huey Martin, Wayne Heubner, Bill Misener, Jamie Caswell, Mike Moore and Dave Bolt organized the three separate events and there was plenty of participation from the community, both near and far.
Trivia night was held Sept. 25 with 15 teams. Firefighters from the Cobden Station of Whitewater Region Fire department helped organize and run the event, which was held at the Cobden Legion.
Two days later, a golf tournament was held at the Oaks of Cobden with 92 golfers and several more who joined them just for supper.
And finally, on Oct. 3, a barbecue was held in the Cobden Legion parking lot in the afternoon, followed by an evening of entertainment upstairs. There was also a silent auction, 50/50 draw, t-shirts for sale and raffle draw. There were several volunteers who helped throughout the barbecue and the committee members are thankful for their help.
Ms. Burns noted the two volunteer bar tenders at the evening event also donated their tips to Ms. Moore.
“I can’t believe the support,” said Ms. Burns, who comes from a large city.
And it wasn’t just those who attended the events, she said. The business people, and just people who found out about the fundraiser, were generous in their donations, whether it was sponsoring a hole for the golf tournament or donating money to help off-set the costs or providing something for the silent auction and raffle tables, Ms. Burns added.
“When we were going around and asking for donations, no one even hesitated,” she said. “As soon as we said it was a fundraiser for Patsy, they were like, what can we do to help.”
However, it was no surprise to the other committee members.
“We all help each other,” said Ms. Heubner. “We were pretty sure the community would rally for Patsy.”
Ms. Moore has been an employee with the Township of Whitewater Region (and formerly Cobden) for 25 years and knows a lot of people, Mr. Heubner said.
“You always see her out and about and helping people.”
While those fundraisers are over, there is one more, Ms. Burns noted. A draw will be held New Year’s Eve. While the exact location isn’t yet known where the draw will take place, the idea of pulling the winning tickets at the Legion’s New Year’s Eve dance is one suggestion.
The draw has three parts…a trip for two to Las Vegas, a stay at Logos Land and a barbecue. The tickets are $5 each and can be purchased from most committee members or at various stores in Cobden.
Ms. Moore is thankful for the support, explaining, that she wasn’t against the fundraiser, but didn’t think she needed the help.
“I am so thankful to everybody,” she said.
