WHITEWATER REGION —
Members of the Whitewater Region Library Board gave a presentation at last night’s Council meeting. Their presentation highlighted the different ways in which the three branches in Whitewater Region have been impacted.
The Province of Ontario recently cut library funds by 50 per cent, which caused the inter-library loans system to be cancelled. This means patrons are no longer able to request materials from other locations. It has already caused problems for residents. It has resulted in an unformed book club in Beachburg and another resident being unable to access more titles in their favourite, obscure genre.
The problems and obstacles the Library faces in order to continue to serve the patrons of Whitewater Region were met with the hope of solutions. Councillor Neil Nicholson is a seasoned patron, as it helped him when he was furthering his education after serving in the military. He agrees the Library is a service the Region cannot afford to lose.
“A letter will be written,” said Mayor Moore, in response to the decision that was reached for a letter to be written, signed and presented to Renfrew County.
The Library Board and Council both agreed on remaining with books in circulation instead of making the switch to e-readers. “I like to read books,” said Gwen Bennett, Chairman of the Whitewater Region Library Board. “I like to turn the pages.”
Reeve Cathy Regier will be presenting the letter to Renfrew County at a later date.
